Hi,
The first line of treatment for
Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury consists of the following:
1. First aid to reduce swelling and pain. This may include resting the knee, applying ice, using gentle compression with an
elastic bandage, elevating the leg, and taking
analgesic medicines, such as
acetaminophen or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
2. Using crutches and/or splints in the first few days, but should not be used for long as it could cause knee
stiffness.
3. Strength and motion exercises to help prepare you for treatment.
What type of further treatment you would require depends on:
1. Degree of ACL tear - grade I, II, or III sprain.
2. When the injury occurred and how stable your knee is.
3. Injury to the other parts of the knee.
4. Whether you had other knee problems before, such as
osteoarthritis.
5. How active you are, your age and overall health.
6. Your willingness and ability to complete a long and rigorous
rehabilitation program.
Treatment options include:
1. Nonsurgical treatment only, such as a physical rehabilitation program.
2. ACL surgery to reconstruct the ACL or to reconstruct it and repair other injuries.
Kindly consult Orthopedician for appropriate evaluation and further management.
Hope the information provided would be helpful. Let me know if I can assist you further. All the best.
