Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have ascites... I have had no alcohol in about six months... I only drank wine before... I do not have hep C... am on a low sodium diet...and aldactone... I have lost weight but my abdomen is still large.. I have cirrhosis...is there anything else I can do?
There is no permanent treatment for cirrhosis except liver transplantation. Ascites develop in cirrhosis because liver affection leads less plasma protein synthesis and so hypoproteinemia can lead edema (other mechanism is also working). For that diuretic given and low salt diet taken. You have not mentioned your age.
If young adult and if suitable liver transplantation is the final treatment option. You might have alcohol induce liver cirrhosis as in past alcohol history is present. If portal hypertension presents TIPSS like less invasive procedure can be planned. Consult surgeon or gastroenterologist for examination and discuss all these.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Parth Goswami
