How Can Abdominal Pain And Diarrhea Be Treated?

Hi There: I am a 54-year-old woman who is experiencing abdominal pain and diarrahea. At first it started out as constipation. Now I have bright red blood coming out of my anus now both in the toilet and on toilet tissue. I am assuming it is possible that I strained myself while constipated. However, it is been several hours now and I still have abdominal pain and the urge to have a bowel movement. Should I go to the doctor. Give it some time?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It would be best for you to be seen by your doctor for assessment of your blood.

As you stated, blood can sometimes be seen as a result of straining but other causes should be ruled out.

Other causes of anal blood would be:

(1) Infection
(2) Hemorrhoids
(3) Benign/non cancerous growth
(4) Bleeding disorder
(5) Side effect of medicines eg medicines to reduce clotting
(6) Cancerous growth

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
