Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
A day and a half ago I started having gut pain suddenly. My last colonoscopy shows diverticuli. So I m thinking I m having an attack of diverticulitis. Will this go away on it s own ( liquid diet today) or is it definitely something I should go to er with? My doctor isn t available until after Labor Day.
You have a history of diverticulitis. If your diverticulitis is mild it can go away by itself. Take liquid diet, dietary supplements, plenty of water, intravenous fluids if needed & rest.
After you recover you should take high fiber diet. Avoid constipation. Antacids & PPI's are quite effective.
If you are a chronic patient of diverticulitis, you should visit ER, get physically examined. Your treating doctor will give you a course of oral antibiotics(a combination of ciprofloxacin & metronidazole).
You will get relief once the infection & inflammation get reduced. Avoid smoking, alcohol, addictions if any. Do regular exercise, maintain a low BMI.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Nupur K, General & Family Physician
