How Can Abnormal Menstruation Be Treated?

I have had an abnormal period. I have been bleeding since October 1 2016. its been everyday straight. its clots the size of golf balls and sometimes is bright red blood and sometimes its dark red blood. I am going through the overnight pads and the ultra size tampons together every 30 to 45 minutes. I have tried birth control to fix it and nothing works. all I want to do is lay around and be lazy. is there anything that I can try to ask my doctor about to get him to help me.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Bleeding since October 1st is not normal. It could be due to hormonal imbalance, miscarriage and abnormal pregnancy (if you are sexually active), adenomyosis/fibroid, pelvic inflammatory disease, bleeding disorder, cervix/endometrial dysplasia, anovulatory ovarian disorder (due to prolonged estrogen production), prolonged continuous courses of the combined oral contraceptive pill.

Systemic causes can be thyroid disease, excessive emotional/physical stress. I would suggest to consult gynecologist as ealry as possible and undergo vaginal examination, reproductive and thyroid hormone analysis, coagulation profile, USG scan, endometrial biopsy and PAP smear if needed.

Specific treatment will depend on cause. Progesterone shot or progesterone pill and tranexemic acid will help you to reduce bleeding. Maintain hygiene and eat healthy diet with iron supplements. Avoid stress, drink plenty of water and maintain proper pelvic hygiene.

Hope this may help you. Contact further if follow up needed.

Best regards,
Dr. Sagar
