Dear Ma'am, Hi & Welcome.
I can understand your concern for the safety of the medications during
pregnancy.
Based on the history you seem to be suffering from
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).
As of date, the the Proton-pump inhibitors are the most effective drug therapy for symptom control and healing of oesophagitis in GERD. However, their safety during pregnancy is not established hence should be avoided.
Antacids are fast and effective at relieving the symptoms of
heartburn & are as a result of the immediate symptom relief provided. About 30-50% of women will only require antacids to ease their heartburn of pregnancy. Only limited data exist concerning the effects of antacids on the fetus with no controlled trials of efficacy. The
Magnesium or Calcium-containing antacids are safe during and hence can be taken for the immediate relief.
Antacids that contain
sodium bicarbonate should not be taken because these antacids can lead to fluid retention.
The H2 receptor antagonists (H2RAs) like
Ranitidine are the most commonly used and the safest medications for the pregnant woman with heartburn hence can also be taken after consulting your treating doctor.
Besides medications you need to have certain lifestyle changes like:
1. To eat several small meals instead of two or three large meals.
2. After you eat, wait 2 to 3 hours before you lie down. Late-night snacks may increase the symptoms of GERD.
3. Avoid chocolate & mint as they can make GERD worse. They relax the valve between the
esophagus and the stomach.
4. Avoid spicy foods, foods that have a lot of acid (like tomatoes & oranges), and coffee can make GERD symptoms worse.
5.Do not smoke or chew tobacco.
6. If you have GERD symptoms at night, raise the head of your bed 6 in. (15 cm) to 8 in. (20 cm) by putting the frame on blocks or placing a foam wedge under the head of your mattress. (Adding extra pillows does not work).
Hope the suggestions given above would be useful in getting rid of the symptoms of GERD.
