How Can An Animal Scratch On The Hand Be Treated?

We are in Mexico on a family vacation. Our son was scratched by a local wild animal (a coati - looks like a cross between a monkey and a lemar).  my son was holding an ice cream cone and the animal reached out to grab it, scratching his hand in the process.  The scratches themselves are minimal, but our concern is any chance of contracting rabies or tetanus or any other disease of concern. Should we undergo rabies vaccine? Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome to 'Ask a Doctor' service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I understand your concern for your child. Since it is a minimal scratch and not by a rabid animal it will not require a anti rabies vaccination. However if your child is above 10 years and not received anti tetanus injection then to be on a safe side You can get a dose of TT. If your child develops fever within a day or two, then I advise you to visit a nearby doctor and get evaluated. Do not worry your child is safe.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Suhas Chauhan
