Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a slightly infected cartilage ear piercing. I have had it for a little over a month and I have washed it 2x a day with both saline and salt water, and antibacterial soap (in that order). And it still somehow got infected. I have considered using either Mupirosin or Cortisone ointment. (I have also considered Tea Tree Oil) Which would be best to use or if you have a different idea of treatment please let me know.
As per your query, you have infected ear piercing which is due to fact that conditions might not be highly septic and instruments not adequately sharp otherwise there will be minor skin trauma which leads to infection. I would suggest you apply fusidic acid cream or mupirocin cream locally to treat or avoid any infection and pus in the ear lobe. Clean it properly. If bleeding occurs, you can apply the pressure for ten minutes till the bleeding stops. Keep wearing ring and avoid removing it as it can cause closure of the site. You should take Tylenol for pain. Consult ENT specialist for proper examination. The doctor may prescribe an antibiotic course for seven to ten days.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
