Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My wife had her bowel nicked during surgery.20 centimers of the lower bowel were removed. She has a leaking fistula and a large open wound. She is in a acute care facility. Can a fistula be repaired surgically before the fistula stops leaking? It has leaked for a month. My e mail address is YYYY@YYYY
The usual treatment for a leaking bowel fistula is to apply a colostomy bag, and allow the fistula to slowly heal and close on itself. It may take a few weeks depending on the size of the bowel injury. In certain situations, if peritonitis occurs, surgical intervention is done, and by open or laparoscopic method the fistula can be closed and the peritoneal infection treated.
