How Can An Infected Ingrown Toenail Be Treated?

Ingrown Toenail-My son has an ingrown toenail (1st possibly 2nd in lifetime) I am aware that the nails should be cut straight across, but he insists on rounding them. He keeps his toenails cut extremely short at all times which makes lifting the nail to relieve pressure impossible (there is nothing to lift) He picks at them often, so i am pretty certain this was self inflicted. Currently he is playing both football and lacrosse, between practices, games, and work he is on his feet 12 hours a day wearing either work boots or cleats. Taking a break from either sport at the moment apparently is not an option. Dr. appointment scheduled for Tuesday, In the meantime 3 practices and 2 games My Question-what is the quickest way to dry up the infection, and or reduce the swelling

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Consult a general surgeon and get evaluated. The infected nail must be removed to prevent unwanted complications. It can be removed easily under local anesthesia. A short course of antibiotic cover is also required.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
