How Can An Itchy Rash On The Elbow Region Be Treated?

My daughter age 6 last Thursday I noticed a fine rash on her arms elbow region she complained of being itchy I monitored it through the day her asking to go to bed which is unlike her so I gave Benadryl to see if it would help incase an allergic reaction. The next morning it looked better worsening as the day went on. Sunday I took her to dr. she had a low grade fever at this time of 99.4 He started her on Zyrtec another stronger oral anthesistane and cream applied to the areas that she scratched and infected looking due to the redness. Its now going into Wednesday and she has decreased appetite fatigue cough sore throat when she coughs. With more symptoms than what we started with and her fine rash just located on her cheeks of her face stomach has three small spots and her sides near wear clothes rub has small areas arms and legs not fingers hands toes or feet back. but its not getting any better. I haven t changed any body soaps or laundry soaps she does have allergy to wheat and milk. with just limiting these two in her diet is all I have done for years so I wouldn t assume these would cause this big of a reaction. What could this possibly be. That a pediatrician or myself are missing.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear Parent, based on your history it looks like your daughter may be suffering from a viral exanthematous reaction. This could be confirmed by some blood tests.

If this is the cause, your daughter will require conservative management till symptoms subside and she feels better. This may take 5 to 7 days depending on your daughters immunity to cope the condition.

Conservative management means:
1) You'll need to take care of her hydration (minimum 2 liters or 6 to 8 glasses of water per day).
2) See that she eats well. As she has fever she might not taste the food well, so give her some bland food like cornflakes, etc.
3) Manage symptomatic treatment, eg. antipyretic tablet for fever, antihistaminic for rash, etc.

I hope could answer your question. Wishing you and your family good health.
