How Can An Ovarian Cyst Be Treated?

I had a large ovarian cyst and two months ago I had it removed along with both ovararies and the fallopian tubes. Since then, I have contstant pain in my pubic area. It is a aching and throbbing pain along sharp pains that feel like electric shocks and radiates down. The pain is so sharp sometimes it makes me gasp. Been for an ultra sound and they said everything looks normal. Also tested for a bladder infection and came back negative Is this normal? Should it not be getting better, after almost two months? Frustrated. Thanks.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I highly doubt that you are suffering from "Ovarian Remnant Syndrome (ORS)". This condition occurs when ovary tissue is not completely removed.

Most frequent symptoms include pelvic pain (as in your case) and sometimes an asymptomatic pelvic mass. Chronic pain is present in about 85% of cases. Diagnosis could be made by a thorough pelvic examination, imaging and/or laboratory tests.

Follicle-stimulating hormone could be measured, as this indicates if there is any functional remaining ovary tissue.

In cases where there is pain but imaging is negative, the test of provocation of remnant ovarian tissue with clomiphene citrate (50 mg twice daily for 10 days) could be helpful in demonstrating the presence of remnant tissue (in about 75% of cases). If this test results negative, it does not exclude the diagnosis of ORS.

The treatment of ORS could be done via laparoscopy, as advised by your doctor, in order to remove any remnant ovarian tissue.

I hope I have answered your question and wish you good luck!

Regards,
Dr. Ervin Toçi
