How Can Appetite Loss After Chemotherapy Be Treated?

Hello, My friend has gone through chemo and strong drugs for pain, because he has prostrate cancer. He is now only taking Ensure and such...no real food and he has lost way too much weight. He needs to eat, even if he gets nauseous, or just isn t hungry. I think Megace might recharge his appetite. Your thoughts, plpease. Thank you very much. D

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Yes, Loss of appetite after chemotherapy is very common and it may be difficult to treat it. Ensure or Supportan are good substitutions but if there are nausea and vomit than MEGOSTAT MAY BE ADDED.

Also, I will advise your dad to take Cyproheptadine syrup 2 tsp twice daily half an hour before meals to increase his nutrition. If there is no improvement, she may need parenteral nutrition.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
