How Can Atrial Fibrillation Along With Elevated BP Be Treated?

My mom is taking both metrapolol and multaq for her atrial fibrilation. Her blood pressure is currently 147/75 and her heart rate is 59. The metrapolol would bring both down and the multaq is supposed to keep the rate regular. I m worried about giving her the metrapolol that will lower the heart rate and worried about not giving it to her because her blood pressure is somewhat high. It was 170/80 earlier today. What to do?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Metoprolol is an anti hypertensive and used to treat hypertension. First thing I have to say that don’t change or substitute drugs without informing your cardiologist. Single recording of a higher BP can be transient. Repeat the BP after few hours. If it is still high, then additional anti hypertensive may be needed.

Hope I have answered your query.

Thanks.
