Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I had an episode of atrial fibrillation about a month ago. It lasted a few days until they did a cardioversion to normalize the rythym. Been taking metoprolol 25mg for the past month. My doctor now wants me to take 240 mg Diltiazem. Is this a safe dose and does this mean I ll be permanently on this medication? I don t feel comfortable taking it with what I have read online
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic. I can understand your concern. 240 mg diltiazem dose is very high. Usual dose of diltiazem is 90-120 mg. So better to confirm twice before taking 240 mg diltiazem. And yes, you have to take diltiazem life long to control Atrial Fibrillation (AF). Another option is radio frequency Ablation (RFA). It is permanent treatment for AF. So discuss about RFA with your cardiologist and opt for it as results are very good. Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
