How Can Bipolar Disorder Be Treated?

How do I get my niece into treatment. She is bipolar and hasn t been taking her meds. She is over 18 and won t go in on her own. We are worried for her safety and or other people around her. We have contacted the police but they said they can t do anything unless she commits a crime. Really??? So in the mean time, our hands are tied and have to wait until something bad happens to her or anyone else? She is in a manic state and her family fears for her.

Hi,

You would need to consider contacting healthcare workers such as a psychiatrist. A psychiatrist would be able to assess her mental state and if he or she believes that she is a threat to herself or anyone else, can take action to have her treated.

Your family doctor may be able to refer you to a psychiatrist or one may be available at your local hospital. Online sites such as healthgrades also give the location and ratings of psychiatrists.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
