How Can Bone Cancer Be Diagnosed?

I am having an aspiration from my femur next week. They are trying to clarify why my bone lit up in a nuclear scan. They said it may have lit up from a femur fracture, 11 months ago. Or, it could be part of a MRSA infection I had in my hand, 4 1/2 months ago. If it was cancer, in any form, would they find that out through this test as well? Or do all cancer tests through aspirations come from the bone marrow in my hips?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Bone cancer can be diagnosed by undergoing basic imaging investigations like X-ray and CT scan. To confirm the diagnosis, a small chunk of bone is taken as bone biopsy and sent for histopathological examination. Based on your description, it appears to be more of an infective problem than bone cancer.

Hope the information provided helps.

All the best.

Regards,
Dr. Ashakiran. S
