Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have just been diagnosed with a return of my right breast cancer, after 14 yrs in remission. My mammogram showed irregularities and I had 2 biopsies this past Monday which came back positive. I am going on Monday for a MRI of breast to cofirm there is no lymph node involvement. What I know at this point is that it s estrogen-driven and slow to progress. The first time it was in very early stage and had lumpectomy and radiaion. I know that you can t radiate the breast again. My question is what is involved if lymph nodes are involved? On Monday, we will also have an educational meeting to discuss tx options and explain it all to me. I m 69 yrs old and don t expect to live forever, but am scared. I ll do better after I have all the info. I am dealing with a wonderful breast cancer center in Franklin, TN. YYYY@YYYY
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Yes, you are right.
You can not give radiation to breast for relapse. If your axiillary lymphnodes are involved in MRI then you will need mastectomy with wide dissection of axiillary nodes. You will also need post operative chemotherapy to prevent local site relapse. If your hormone status is positive then you should take hormone pills (tamoxifen) life long to stay in remission. Don't get depressed. Breast cancer is having excellent prognosis.
Hope I have answered your query.
