How Can Burning Sensation And Numbness In The Feet Be Treated?

I have fibromyalgia and my neurologist wants to put me on gabapentin as I now have burning legs and numb feet. He did a nerve conduction test and told me that I do not have neuropathy, so said he believes my fibromyalgia is acting up. I have had this for 20 yrs, and never had any numbness or burning legs before. Is this common? Also heard that gabapentin can cause a myriad of bad side effects and weight gain. What are medications can help me besides this and Lyrica? I am on a low dose of sertraline for my pain. Thanks! t

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Burning and numbness can occur with fibromyalgia.

It is true that gabapentin can cause side effects but most of the effects are in the minority of persons not the majority. It is possible that you may use it with no problems. If you do use it and have issues, then it can be discontinued.

Other medicines are Tegretol, Duloxetine, and Amitriptyline.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
