Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, My lips have always been dry, but they suddenly overnight became very sore and red and they remained like that for about a week, they have now turned black. It s been 2 weeks and they are sore, dry and black and doesn t seem to be getting better, even though I have been lathering them with Vaseline.
As per your query you have chapped lips which is becoming black as well is due to hyperpigmentation due to excessive sun exposure and over production of melanin by melanocytes.
I would suggest you to not to prick your lips and do not wet it with saliva as it will remove natural moist layer. You should drink plenty of water and take fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. Aloe vera gel is also very effective in discoloration. Apply petroleum jelly for moisture and apply sunscreen with SPF 50 and containing zinc oxide. If condition persists or doesn't improve in 10 days then consult dermatologist and start treatment accordingly due to underlying systemic condition.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
