Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Can Chest Congestion Along With Wheezing And Cough Be Treated?
My doctor recommended I take Allegra D. My problem is terrible chest congestion, wheezing and a dry cough left over from a flu or cold that I got six weeks ago. The Allegra D says it treats eyes, nose, etc. but nothing about easing chest congestion. So I m wondering if this can do me any good.
As per your query you have symptoms of chest congestion along with wheezing and cough which seems to be due to severe upper respiratory tract infection and gets triggered by exposure to the allergen. I would suggest you to
- Take cough expectorants on daily basis. - Do warm saline gargles with pinch of salt water. - Take steam inhalation on daily basis and avoid cold carbonated beverages. - Mast cell stabilizers such as sodium cromoglycate is effective to reduce your symptoms.
If condition keeps on persisting consult ENT specialist once and get it examined. Doctor may order blood test , throat swab test and may prescribe antibiotics Amoxicillin at least for 10 days along with mucolytic agents. Doctor may also order allergy test.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
