How Can Chest Congestion Be Treated?

Over a year ago I had a really bad flu, lasted for two weeks. I did see a doctor. I got over it, but seem to have some residual flem in my chest or lungs(?)... not able to get really deep breath(I have mild asthma and chaulked this up to asthma), but also notice when I cough really hard, I cough up flem/ mucus. Just wondering if this will ever go away or is it a symptom of something bad?
