How Can Chlamydia Be Treated?

What is the best treatment for chlamydia in men--I no symptoms but my girlfriend had a positive culture for chlamydia during an annual physical and she also had no symptoms--she had sex with a friend a month before we had sex and thinks that is where she contracted it?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I understand your concern.

Chlamydia infection usually does not manifest any symptom until you get checked and found you have it (as in the case of your partner).

As you are not having any symptom, I recommend to get tested for this infection. If negative, then, should repeat testing after 3 months.

If during this period, you will experience:
- cloudy discharge from penis
- burning/itching penile head
- painful urination
- pain or swelling of the testicles

then, medical treatment is recommended. The most commonly prescribed antibiotics are Azythromycin or Doxycyclin.

If your partner has been diagnosed with chlamydia and doctor put on antibiotics, you should be treated also to prevent further transmission.

Hope this helps.
