Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My wife had knee replacement surgery Thursday last week. No bowel movement since before surgery. Now she is in extreme pain from constipation. She is on oxycontin extended release with occasional oxycodone for short term pain relief. What can be done to offer relief? Tried myrilaax and stool softeners but no results yet. Brian
Constipation is a side effect of the Oxycontin and oxycodone. Moreover, immobilization following surgery can also contribute to constipation. Continue Miralax and psyllium containing stool softeners. Also, use Dulcolax (Bisacodyl) suppository 10 mg rectally once daily to stimulate bowel movements. Reducing the dose of Oxycontin and oxycodone can also help. Drink plenty of water. It is also important to move and walk around to stimulate bowel movements.
Hope this answers your question Please address further questions here Regards Dr.Lekshmi
