Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I ve sufferd with constipation my entire life but now it s scarey. After 3 days of taking laxitives and stool softeners and hours of sitting on the toilet with no success, my rectum feels like it s turned inside out. I can t sit and there s fluid seeping from it. What do I do?
You have a long history of constipation which is now enhanced for the last 3 days wherein you are feeling that rectum has turned inside out and unable to pass stool in spite of stool softeners and laxatives. This indicates that there may be an actual obstruction in the colon or rectum.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
1) Consult a General Surgeon for clinical evaluation, examination and further investigations like ano-proctoscopy, per-rectal digital examination. 2) X-ray of abdomen in standing position. 3) If fecoliths are present, then try saline soap enema. Need bowel cleaning and preparation for colonoscopy. 4) CT scan of abdomen. 5) All these will rule out or confirm the cause of constipation and gives plan of further management.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. T Chandrakant
