How Can Chronic Cough And Difficulty In Swallowing Be Treated?

I had an upper respiratory inf about a month ago. Went to urgent care, was given a 6 Day prednisone Rx. I still have a choking cough, mostly in the middle of the night. It feels like there’s a raw spot in my throat, and the more I swallow the worse it is. Then I cough until I gag. It’s very frightening.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your query you have symptoms of chronic cough and difficulty in swallowing which seems to be due to lung infection and bronchospasms leading to bronchitis.

Need not to worry. I would suggest you to take steam inhalation on daily basis. You should consult pulmonologist without any delay. Doctor may order blood test, routine investigations and get an X-ray of the chest and immunoglobulin G levels checked for further treatment. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics along with decongestants and mucolytic agents. Do warm saline gargles with pinch of salt water. Take expectorants and steam inhalation and take rest. You should avoid hot, sharp and spicy foods.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
