General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Persistent coughing is most commonly related to : (1) post nasal drip of mucus
(2)GERD- reflux
(3)asthma

Out of these, post nasal drip is the most common cause. There are some persons who are not aware of the drip itself and only present with the cough.

Some persons may have a combination of causes eg reflux and post nasal drip.

Treatment of post nasal drip would include: (1) avoid any substance that worsens the drip. This can be dust, pollen, animals, certain foods
(2)antihistamines/decongestant combinations
(3)if this is not effective medications such as montelukast, may be needed
It can take a few weeks for treatment to start to work so it needs to be used consistently.

Reflux is treated by avoiding certain foods (spicy, acidic, fried ) and using reflux medication.

I hope this helps
