How Can Chronic Cough Be Treated?

My mother has had a chronic cough over 15 years, seen many doctors and specialist and still can t find a diagnosis. She can t smell any deodorants, perfumes, air conditioning, heaters, spices, any type of odor gives her a cough attack to where she vomits or pees herself. She doesn t smoke or drink. She has been prescribed from allergies Meds to tusinex and promethazine but after a couple of weeks she becomes immune to it and has no effects anymore. Please help! Her heart has enlarged from all the coughing, it s hell watching my mother with this never ending cough.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for asking your question at health care magic.

Since your mother has history of coughing episodes on exposure to trigger factors and long history, I would encourage the possibility of Cough variant asthma.Asthma occurs due to constriction of muscles in wind pipe(bronchi).

If a patient comes to me with similar complaints, I ant to get a pulmonary function tests and chest x ray as first step.More investigation may also be needed depending on initial results.

I recommend that your mother consult a pulmonologist/primary care physician to get the evaluation done.
Meanwhile avoid any triggering factor for the cough.
Asthma is treated with salbutamol inhalor , corticosteroid inhalor and more medications as needed according to initial response.

Hope I was able to answer your question
Please feel free to address any more concerns
Regards,
Dr.Lekshmi
