How Can Chronic Cough Be Treated?

Hello, I am a 36 year old female, I am a smoker. I have been sick for four months now. It started with a head cold, then sinus infection (which I get two to three times a year) then it turned into bronchitis, again, very normal for me for maybe ten years now. And my Dr thought last week I had pneumonia because she heard noises in my lungs but wanted an xray to confirm it. Xray came back negative, no pneumonia. But I had been put on prednisone and levaquin for the antibiotic because the z PAC wasn t working. They were going to admit me the day after my appointment when I had the x ray, but it came back negative. I am no better, I just don t have a high fever now. But I am coughing very hard, it almost founds like a deep forced croup cough. How bad can this be? I have never been this sick and as a single mother to two children, 16 and 3 years old..and I stay at home and take care of my mother who lives with me. I m very worried and know in have to get back to the doctor

# '' QUIT SMOKING " for ever is the first & foremost thing you have to
do if you really want to get cure & if you are really concerned for your
children
smoking is the main reason behind your such misery .
# gargles with salted lukewarm water & peppermint 4 times a day
# avoid alcohol / any abuse substances if any
# daily regular walking in fresh air to rejuvenate the lungs with enough
oxygen , light exercises at home , YOGA for 30-40 minutes per day
without failure
# Deep breathing exercises with Spirometry help to boost the lungs &
monitor the progress of the underlying inflammation of the lungs
# antibiotics will be only supportive to some level as the oral steroids ,
anti-inflammatory agents , decongestants , bronchodilators as per the
Physician `s decision .
# maintain hydration with plenty of liquids
# enough amount of balanced nutritious diet to combat invading pathogen
# when resting prefer semi reclining position
# avoid exposure to dusty environment / pollen containing materials if
needed can use face mask always
# avoid to consume excess sugar , artificial sweeteners , more oily , spicy
non vegetarian , junk foods , chilled beverages
# anti- oxidants play supportive role
# avoid stress / anxiety
# manage to have sound regular sleep of 7-8 hours
# avoid exposure to air conditioner / cooler wind for prolong periods
# avoid noxious body deoderants or perfumes
# in selected cases we require to take Sputum culture report ,Pulmonary
function test +/- bronchoscopy for further evaluation and management
