Hi, thanks for using Healthcare Magic

Cough is the body's defense mechanism in the respiratory tract and is a symptom of a disease or body reaction to irritation in the throat because of mucus, food, dust, smoke, and so on. Coughing occurs due to certain stimuli, eg dust at cough receptors (nose, respiratory tract, ear). The causes of chronic cough vary, like:
1. Allergy (may be accompanied by complaints of sneezing in the morning, itching on the body, tightness)
2. Asthma
3. Bronchitis (inflammation of the bronchi-airways into the lungs)
4. Use of certain drugs (e.g. ACE inhibitors)
5. Post Nasal Drip (there is fluid behind the nose)

You SHOULD NOT give him Augmentin, since your husband experience this the night before and since Augmentin is an antibiotic (that the using must be given by his treating doctor if needed).

Some tips for your husband:
1. If cough happen due to allergy, then the best preventive is to avoid triggers.
2. Drink a lot of water
3. Get some rest
4. Drink honey plus melon in warm water
5. Install humidifier
6. Consume expectorant to exclude the excessive mucus (guaifenesin, potassium iodide, etc)

If the cough doesn't heal in 2 weeks, I'll suggest to bring your husband to a pulmonologist for further management.

Hope this helps,
Take care.
