How Can Chronic Cough Be Treated?

I have had a cough for two weeks, the first week severe, then it changed to more of a bronchial cough. I was first given a zpac, which didn t help, and I now have tessla pearls for the cough but am stil quite congested and the second doctor visit gave me a different antibiotic, an inhaler, and told me to take clairitin. Why would he suggest claritin?

A chronic cough, it's the cough that last more than 8 weeks for adults and in your case it's less than this period
The possible causes of your cough are:
1- bronchial infection
2-allergic reaction
3-Gastroesophageal reflux disease
4-drugs like Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors

The proper treatment its depends on the cause which can be suspected by symptoms and clinical examination .
In your case your doctor has been treating you with antibiotic and antiallergic drugs which make the most suspected causes is an allergic bronchitis with a bacterial superifections.
Claritine it's an antihistamine that reduces the effects of natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine can produce symptoms of sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose and cough .

The best treatment for you:
1- antihistamine
2-antibiotic and preferred to be amoxicillin-clavulanic acid
3-Salbutamol as an inhaler
4-paracetamol if there's a fever caused by bacterial superinfection
5- preventing dehydration by drinking plenty of water .
6-avoide the contact with substances that cause allergic reaction like dust , plant pollen , cat hair.
