Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been coughing for 5-6 months. I cough up small green balls of hard mucus in my thicken yellow/green mucus. The dr put me on antibiotics a month ago (amoxicillin) and again last week. I am taking Cefdinir 300 mg. I have been feeling very tired and have a low grade fever. An x ray last year showed three small cloudy areas on my X-ray which the dr said looked normal. I am a building contractor. I work in old buildings rehabbing them. I have done a lot of different jobs in these old buildings. I have worked with old asbestos floors and pipe coverings as well as installing drywall, mudding and sanding the walls for the past 12 years. The buildings do have mold and mildew inside until they are gutted and dried out. I usually wear a mask on tearouts, but often skip it when muddling and sanding. How can I get rid of this thick mucus and feel better?
I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.
Taking into account your personal history and working experience, as your work requires exposure to asbestos and other toxic materials, chronic respiratory disease is suspected and needs special medical attention. So, should consult immediately with pulmonologist, and get respiratory function test done to evaluate your respiratory pathways.
Apart antibiotics, you need to take: - mucolytics to dissolve phlegm - anti-histamines to ease coughing - bronchodilatators to open up respiratory pathways - always wear nasal and mouth or special masks to prevent further inhalation of toxins.
Hope this helps.
