How Can Chronic Cough Be Treated?

My brother has a bad cold for almost a week now - I believe he has bronchitis. He has been coughing and as of tonight his chest has a rattle when he breathes and it makes him cough. He has no temperature and seems okay otherwise. Should he go to the emergency room or do you think he should be fine for now. He did start taking some Clindamycin HCL and as I read this tonight - it clearly says not for virus infections - just bacterial so maybe he should stop taking that??? It was something he had and it was prescribed for him to take before dental cleanings.

Hello,

Your brother has symptoms of chronic cough which is due to respiratory tract infection leading to bronchitis or granular pharyngitis. I would suggest you do warm saline gargles and take steam twice a day. Avoid Clindamycin HCl and take anti-inflammatory medication such as Sinarest. Avoid the use of sharp and spicy food substances. Avoid cold carbonated beverages. Your symptoms will resolve in one week.

If symptoms keep son persisting, you should consult ENT specialist and take proper treatment. You should get an x-ray chest done along with pulmonary function tests. The doctor may prescribe antibiotics (amoxicillin or penicillin) at least for five days along with decongestant.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
