How Can Chronic Cough Be Treated?

i have a very bad deep cough.. . I ve had it in the past (about each year & it lasts 3-5 weeks) I am in week 5 now & its not stopping. I m healthy 50 year old female. I believe it could be allergy related as it happens each year around the same time .

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It is possible that it is an allergic reaction or since viral/bacterial chest infections also tend to be common around a particular time, this can also be a possible cause.

If the cough is wet, you may need a mucolytic to help break up the mucus in your chest example as bromohexine or guaifenesin.

Fluids would also help to decrease thickness of secretions as well. You may also need a course of antibiotics.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
