Hello,

As your complaints started only with a dry cough, your doctor might be giving medicine for the flu. Coming to medication for a chronic cough, there are no specific medicines for chronic viral infections. Viral infections have to be subsided by themselves by our body immunity (lymphocytes). During the time of chronic infections, our body immunity may get down and in such condition, we may get bacterial infections (bronchitis). But the main symptom in case of bacterial infection is a fever. So check for any symptom of fever to know whether there is any bacterial infection. In my opinion, you have to go for the following investigations:
1. Complete blood test
2. X-ray chest
Take rest for more time and plenty of water. Your symptoms will subside soon. If any abnormality is seen in investigations.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Vamsi Krishna Chittimoju
