How Can Chronic Cough Be Treated?

I have been on Bromphenir cough medicine and using Azelastine HCI nasal solution for almost a week for bronchitis and it doesn t feel much better. I had gone to a MedStop place to get diagnosed. My stomach muscles are very sore now when I cough. How long will it take to stop the coughing?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your query, you have symptoms of a chronic cough which is due to upper respiratory tract infection and compromised immunity leading to bronchitis.

I would suggest you to:
- Do warm saline gargles and take steam twice a day.
- Apply mist humidifiers in room.
- Avoid use of sharp and spicy food substances.
- Avoid cold carbonated beverages.

Your symptoms will resolve in 1 week. If symptoms keep persisting, then you should consult pulmonologist once and take proper treatment.

You should get X-ray chest done along with pulmonary function tests. The Doctor may prescribe antibiotics (Amoxicillin or Penicillin) at least for 5 days along with the decongestant.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
