Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My daughter who is 12 has had a cold and bad cough for 4 weeks. I took her to urgent care where they put her on zithromax (z-pak). She ended her antibiotic 2 weeks ago, and the cough is still really bad. Over the counter cough meds do not seem to help. Should I be alarmed, or let it run it s course.
I think you should send her to lung specialist. We should rule out pneumonia. She might need to run X-ray of the chest. Meanwhile give her:
- plenty of fluids to keep well hydrated (tea, water, juice)
- apply vapour rub on the chest and back at bedtime
- do aerosoltherapy with saline to ease breathing
- take mucolytic to dissolve the phlegm
- take antihistamine at night
- salbutamol will open airways to ease breathing
Most important get a further consultation with her pediatrician lung specialist.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini,
