How Can Chronic Cough In A Child Be Treated?

I have 4 years old son turning 5 years old this June. He has G6PD deficiency. He suffered from cough, pedia gave him nebulization(asmalin nebule and asmavent) and atibiotic syrup. After a the treatment, the cough is still there. Pedia extended the nebule instead of 7 days to 10 days. After 10 days, the cough is still there just a bit but after a couple of weeks, the cough went back again after being exposed to his cousins who have a cough. The pediatrician ordered to give him another nebulization with the same nebule meds but without antibiotic. After 2 weeks, still has cough. She ordered for Chest X-ray, that gave her a result of Primary KOCH infection. She also have him PPD test but the result was negative. She let us decide. If we will put my son on treatment, since he is G6PD, he might turns yellow and is not a good thing but will let the treatment to stop meaning drug resistance will take place. He ordered vitamins for now, specifically appetite stimulant as my son is not gaining weight. She wants to re-checked for x-ray after 6 months and see it from there. Any suggestion? Is there any chance to have the infection removed by just taking vitamins?

Hello dear, Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

This primary infection usually resolves on its own as a child develops immunity over a 6- to 10-week period. But in some cases, it can progress and spread all over the lungs (called progressive tuberculosis) or to other organs. This causes signs and symptoms such as fever, weight loss, fatigue, loss of appetite, and cough. However, most kids with tuberculosis can be treated as outpatients and cared for at home. The treatment is usually in the form of oral medications. Rarely, three or four drugs may be prescribed. Even though treatment may require months to complete, it's vitally important that the full course of medications be taken in order for tuberculosis to be cured.

Taking vitamin doesn't cure it only bust immunity.

Take Care,

Best regards.
