How Can Chronic Diarrhea And Fatigue Be Treated?

My husband 68 yrs old is experiencing watery, foul smelling, blackish diarrhea. He has had this around 48 hours. The first several hours he was having chills as well. His upper stomach is unsettled with some heartburn. Has not taken any meds for this. He is tired and has been dozing off quite frequently. He did have a flu shot about 24 hours before symptoms started. Thank You YYYY@YYYY

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi and welcome to Healthcaremagic. Thank you for your query. I am Dr. Rommstein, I understand your concerns and I will try to help you as much as I can
Looking at your description it might be related to infection like parasitic infection, malaria or intestinal infection. Other causes include inflammatory bowel diseases

If I were your treating doctor I would have advised you for a battery of tests like blood ofhemoglobin, CBC, Liver function test, Peripheral blood smear for malaria parasite, urine microscopy and an ultrasound if need be. Also, colonoscopy may be required

Meanwhile you should take anti acidity medicines like pantoprazole or ranitidine group of drugs with antacids for 3 to 5 days
You should take multivitamin supplements
Have lots of fluids including ORS and fruit juices to counter dehydration and electrolytic imbalances. You also may consider over-the-counter medications such as bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol) or loperamide (Imodium)

I hope you will find my response informative and helpful Please feel free to ask for follow up question I will happily answer you.
wish you good health
