Hi,
Diarrhea involves the rapid loss of fluid from your body, as foods and liquids you ingest are not absorbed by your
colon. I can understand that a senior like you who has
chronic diarrhea will experience a significant reduction in your quality of life.
Certain dietary strategies may be helpful in treating diarrhea in elderly patients. Avoiding consumption of solid foods and dairy products, replenishing water and electrolytes, using carob or pectin and reintroducing
Lactobacillus acidophilus will help in the long run treatment of your chronic diarrhea.
Other beneficial foods or beverages in treating your diarrhea may include liquid gelatin, clear broth, weak tea with honey, carrot juice, cooked potatoes, bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. Applesauce may be a beneficial food in treating your diarrhea. Applesauce is an easily digestible food that contains significant amounts of
dietary fiber, including pectin.
Because diarrhea may lead to
dehydration, consider consuming at least six, eight-ounce glasses of water per day to help combat fluid loss. As you have mentioned you pass the stool after coughing, I suspect you may be losing control over your anal sphincters so please get an opinion of a surgeon.
I will also suggest apart from taking
Nexpro, get a stool culture and sensitivity done. It may help your doctor to select an appropriate antibiotic if needed or you can also write to me again with your sensitivity report.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
