Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Thank you. I have been diagnosed with chronic diarrhea. I have been prescribed with cholestyramine as a treatment. The information indicates some rather odd side effects. I am wondering if it is considered safe and how it may interact with probiotics? Thank you
Chronic diarrhea is due to some underlying disease. Cholestyramine is bile acid sequestrant drug and work by increasing bile acid excretion from our body.
Bile acids are helpful for digestion and absorption of fat from intestine. It also used as a cholesterol level decreasing drug.
Side effects include constipation and mild gastrointestinal distress. If you are suffering from hemorrhoids, then it can exaggerate the condition otherwise it is safe.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Divyesh Sondarva
