How Can Chronic Headaches Be Treated?

Hi, I am 75 now. I have had a chronic tension headache (99% in left temple area) since a neck injury in 1974. Fioricet has been the most effective therapy for me over 30 years. I was able to stop this Rx back in the 90 s for about 2 years. I have been on 2x/day Fioricet. I have learned to pay attention to an onset and therefore take a dose just before the headache breaks out. If not, a headache can last for many hours and I use ice packs that do help. My new internist scolded me this week telling me I may already have liver disease (not showing on any blood test). She wants me off Fioricet and Rx Meloxicam just to see if this is more beneficial. I would like to NOT have to take anything. I have been noticing lack of energy, fatigue (suddenly falling asleep during the early evening) and occasional nausea. These new symptoms over the past 6 months may be telling me Fioricet is toxic for me. I live in Palm Desert, Calif. Moved from LA 12 years ago. There is a paucity of excellent medical care and neurologists who specialize in prescribing for headaches. And I haven t been able to find a psychiatrist who treats this. I am a licensed psychologist and thought I was always being conservative about taking medications. Being older I am on a 10mg statin, synthroid, and zantac for acid reflex. I would appreciate your feedback and/or referrals. Thank you, Beverly

Hi,

Your treatment strategy depends on the frequency and severity of your headaches, the degree of disability your headaches cause, and your other medical conditions.

Pain relievers such as Aspirin or Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) may help relieve mild migraines. Acetaminophen (Tylenol, others), also may help relieve mild migraines in some people.

Drugs marketed specifically for migraines, such as the combination of Acetaminophen, Aspirin and caffeine (Excedrin Migraine), also may ease moderate migraine pain.

Triptans effectively relieve the pain and other symptoms that are associated with migraines. They are available in pill, nasal spray and injection form.

Anti-nausea medications, opioids and steroids may be used in addition in severe cases.

Also, you need to rest and relax and have good sleep. If there wont be improvement it would be good to do MRI scan and have neurological exam.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
