How Can Chronic Insomnia Be Treated?

I am having trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep. I wake up several times during the night. I can see that once it is to urinate, but the other times I just wake up. I am 66 years old and still have a full-time job. Sometimes I am until 3 AM or wake up at 3or 4 AM. I have started taking melatonin. Two 10 gm tablets. Sometimes it seems to work then other times I just lay there awake. I do not want to take any of the sleep aids or Benedryl because of the main ingredient in them. I have read that several studies have said that ingredient (starts with a d) can lead to dementia. My grandmother died of Alzheimers and my mom had dementia. Do you have any more suggestions?
