Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My baby is 11-month old and was infected with dengue virus with a complications in the lungs and other organs just recently. After staying in the hospital for 2 weeks and eventually his vitals signs were found normal, he was discharged from the hospital. 2 days after his discharged, his cough and colds came back and has been coughing with loud crackles for more than a week now. The doctor diagnosed it as asthma and prescribed doxofylline alone. Reading the details of the drug including the side effects, I would like to ask if it is safe for my baby to take the said medicine? And if it is asthma, can he take montelukast also? Thank you!
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Doxophyline is a drug that is used in asthma and is recommended in children also. If your child is having the cough and the crackles due to asthma this medication might help relieve the symptoms. If this is not the case than you will need to talk to your doctor who will need to examine your child again and make sure every thing is fine and just a dose adjustment of adding another medication is needed. Montelukast is a drug that can be used for asthma also as are some other ones like salbutamol and similar drugs. It is the doctor that will examine the child that should decide which drug to use depending on the examination findings. I hope this is helpful and answers to your question but please feel free to let us know if anymore concerns related to this.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
