Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my sister has cancer she developed a very bad cold. Doctor is giving her doxycline IV . Doctor stated she could only get the medication IV. My sister signed herself out of the hospital because she says the medication made her voice hoarse and she was feeling worse. doctor recommended IV at home but she preferred oral. Did she make a correct decision
The common cold is caused by a virus, and antibiotics will not do anything for the common cold! Antibiotics only work on bacterial infections, and the common cold is caused by a virus. Tell your sister to stop the antibiotics altogether, unless she has evidence of a viral infection. I'd ask your sister's doctor as to why he or she feels that antibiotics are necessary for the common cold.
The only good treatment for the common cold is staying hydrated and time. Antibiotics will only have side effects and make things worse, and will not help with a viral infection. There is no medication that will help in this case, if it truly is the common cold.
I hope I have answered your question. Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.
