Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Can Constipation Be Treated After A Back Surgery?
I have had back surgery on Tuesday and started a schedule dose of Norco at hospital they also started me on Miralax. I have been taking 17g of Miralax daily since tues. and have had no bowel movement since tues. Can I take 17g twice daily to increase or speed things up.
The current dose of 17g is the maximum allowed daily dose so unfortunately, it cannot be increased.
As you would know, the Norco would contribute to constipation because it contains an opioid. The surgery would also play a rold.
If possible, a change in pain medication may be helpful with constipation. Using a fibre supplement such as Benefiber or Metamucil along with a lot of fluids may also help the bowel movements as well.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
