How Can Constipation Be Treated While On Amlodipine Besylate?

I have been prescribed Amlodipine besylate for slightly elevated blood pressure and have been taking it for about 1 month. I have been constipated and my oncologist said the constipation is probably caused by the addition of the Amlodipine as I have not had this problem before. I am unsure whether to take a laxative or a stool softener. Stool has become very hard and dry. Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
First make sure you are drinking plenty of water, at least 6 glasses daily. Avoid anything with caffeine and avoid alcohol. Add a fiber supplement like metamucil or benefiber. if this does not help then you will need to talk to your doctor about a medicine change. You can take a laxative like milk of magnesia occasionally but you want to try and manage it without taking laxatives frequently. Stool softeners do not help much. Add whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet
