Hi,

Did you deliver her following a full-term pregnancy? Was her weight around 6-7 pounds? She doesn't have to burp every time. You can try burping in the middle of the feed and then again at the end for five minutes.

If she hasn't burped, put her on your shoulder and try burping again in another five minutes or so. The frequency of bowel movements in a healthy newborn is from 3-4 a day to 3 a week.

As long as her bowel movements are soft and she does not strain, it is alright to wait a bit. If you feel you must do something, you can place a rubber finger cot over your little finger and put a small amount of Vaseline on the tip.

Spread her buttocks apart and gently slide your finger through her anus up about an inch (2.5cm) and move your finger around in a circle. A minute is enough time. Remove finger and see if she produces a stool.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr Arnold Zedd, Pediatrician
