How Can Cough With Mucus And Ribcage Pain Be Treated?
I am 66 year old male with a bad sinus condition. Two months ago I was coughing fairly hard to expel mucous in my throat which was gagging me. After one episode I had a stabbing pain in my left side under my rib cage. The pain still persists today but is not as intense. I am 60 lbs. overweight with a distended stomach but am losing weight now. I also have some discomfort in my middle upper back but not bad. I have no fatigue more than I usually have. Please advise what you think Thanks. John
Hi. Cough and mucus for 2 months needs physical examination by a Pulmonologist , Investigations of - blood, urine and the mucus for gram staining, AFB staining, culture and sensitivity. CT scan of the chest helps and is better investigation than the X-ray. The pain you got was due to Fracture of the rib. This needs strapping of the chest on the side of the pain in exhalation of air from the chest . This limits the movement of the fractured segments, allowing healing to take place earlier. The treatment will depend upon the reports. and may consist of Anti-Tubercular treatment or other antibiotics, mucolytics and supportive therapy with steam inhalations.
