How Can Dementia Be Treated?

HI- Whats the medication we can use for dementia for combativeness with the least side effects- and then what are the most common side effects- my mom only weighs 100 pounds and has not been able to tolerate medications in general. She has been in a facility for over a year without meds. Will wait for your response. Thanks so much!!! Joan

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi Joan
There are multiple causes for dementia and some may be reversible like a Vitamin B12 deficiency.
However most are not reversible and cognitive symptoms keep on declining with time. What is mostly done is to treat symptoms like psychosis, mood symptoms etc with appropriate treatment if needed.
Regarding the cognitive decline (memory, attention etc) if you pick up a dementia in its early stages there is treatment that can slow the cognitive decline somewhat.
If it has come to a stage where she can not function anymore, the best is to place her in a facility where the is supervision and support
